This week’s playlist, a collection of old and new school TV theme songs is a hat tip to both the ATX Television Festival which kicks off next Thursday, and the time-honored summertime tradition of lazy parenting via the wonders of cable. Team 360 took to the task with a surprising amount of enthusiasm and a somewhat questionable display of taste. We dug deep into the dusty corners of Spotify and unearthed iconic themes such as the Henry Mancini classics "Peter Gunn" and "Pink Panther," lush evocative titles like Angelo Badlamenti’s theme from "Twin Peaks" and indulgent schmaltz like "Laverne and Shirley." We mixed newer tracks like the Blind Boys of Alabama’s "Way Down in the Hole" from season one of "The Wire" with 90s faves like the Rembrandts’ perpetually irritating "I’ll Be There For You" from friends.
For the purpose of this playlist we decided to use only original versions of TV themes despite the fact that there’s apparently an entire industry of artists who exist to record covers of TV songs. That’s just sad, people. Because of this decision a few excellent suggestions were left out including "The Ballad of Serenity" from Firefly, "Josie and the Pussycats" and "Three’s Company" (don’t judge). We bent the rules for "The Love Boat." While we couldn’t find the original Acapulco Lounge version, we found a version with original artist Jack Jones doing his, ahem, "New Jack Swing" version. In any case, we hope that this playlist conjures as many memories of drama, comedy and colossal amounts of wasted time for you as it did for us.
