Dwight Yoakam will kick off this year’s Rodeo Austin music lineup on March 11. JAY JANNER / AMERICAN-STATESMAN 2015

The musical program is out for Rodeo Austin 2017, which kicks off on March 11 and runs through March 25 at the Travis County Expo Center. The rodeo, which has a new CEO, leans heavily on country music, presenting legacy stars such as Kenny Rogers, Dwight Yoakam and Charley Pride alongside younger acts such as Kevin Fowler, Cody Johnson and the Randy Rogers Band.

Notably absent from the lineup is Willie Nelson, who frequently plays the rodeo. He’s been the first night’s performer for the past three years, but he’s on tour at that time this year, with dates in Mississippi, Texas and Oklahoma around the time of the rodeo’s opening.

There’s also a pop/rock component, with singer-songwriter Elle King and soulful rockers Fitz & the Tantrums making an appearance. Absent from the lineup is any kind of hip-hop or contemporary R&B music (although old school soul queen Patti LaBelle makes an appearance). This is not surprising. Urban artists have never had strong representation at the rodeo, which naturally skews country. But notable stars including Nelly and Boyz II Men have played in the past. And we recently learned that Beyoncé’s only Austin appearance ever was when she played the rodeo with Destiny’s Child in 2001.
