Almost a year ago, we lost David Bowie, one of the greatest artists of his era, of any era. He died on January 10, 2016, two days after releasing his “shockingly excellent” final album “Blackstar” on his 69th birthday. It was the first of a devastating year of musical losses that has fans still reeling a year later.

Saturday, Jan 7: Ground Control: A David Bowie birthday celebration at the ABGB. KUTX hosts this Bowie blowout featuring White Denim’s James Petralli, Kevin Russell of Shinyribs and many more. The house band features members of Sounds del Mar, White Ghost Shivers and Carry Illinois, and over a dozen artists are lined up to offer their take on Bowie’s deep cuts and hits. Saturday, Jan 7: David Bowie Birthday Bash at Drinks Lounge. DJ Sue spins Bowie all night, promising to lean on “sixties and seventies- all the glitz and glamour” in his catalog. David Bowie prints and custom prayer candles will be available to buy. The $5 suggested donation goes to PCRM.org for cancer prevention efforts.
Sunday, Jan 8: I am the DJ: Bowie listening party at the Vortex. Party organizers promise to present the arch of Bowie’s catalog beginning with “Space Oddity” in chronological order. There will also be a Bowie-centric artists’ market and drink specials. 11 a.m. to close.
Saturday, Jan. 14: BowiElvis Fest at Empire. Splice Records ATX and Saint Arnold brewing mark the shared birthdays of David Bowie and Elvis Presley with a mashup event celebrating both artists. The evening includes a burlesque performance, a costume contest and performances by Henry + the Invisibles, Hector Ward & the Big Time and more. $15. 7 p.m. doors.
Jan. 26-29: The Bowie Project: A Rock ‘n’ Roll Soundpainting at Ironwood Hall. Andrea Ariel Dance Theater teams up with local Bowie tribute band Super Creeps for a collaborative project that explores Bowie’s genius and influence through movement, color and song. $10-$35. Tickets
