Turns out Team360 has a dark side. When we sent out the call for This Week’s Playlist: Spooky Songsit was met with a barrage of audio unrest that resulted in an epic spook week soundtrack over 3 hours deep. Culled from over half a century of sounds this collection of murder ballads, monster tales and ghost stories runs the gamut in both style and tone.
A menacing track like Marilyn Manson’s "Sweet Dreams" is countered by Valerie June’s "Shotgun" an ominous echo of jealous rage. Kanye West’s monument to self-demonization "Monster" (a song utterly destroyed by the many-headed she-beast that was early Nicky Minaj) bashes up against Lupe Fiasco’s "The Cool," a song our social media editor Jackie Stone declared "the best zombie rap song ever." There are tracks that are deliberately hilarious like Julie Brown’s "Homecoming Queen’s Got a Gun" and tracks that are deceptively depressing like the Jim Carroll Band’s "People Who Died."
Some songs are psychologically disturbing like Eminem’s "Stan," and some are viscerally terrifying like Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ "The Mercy Seat." In sum, This Week’s Playlist: Spooky Songs is a veritable cauldron of Halloween mood music, bubbling with darkness and paranoia, brimming with delightful seasonal unease. Enjoy!
