Free day parties Wednesday and Thursday during SXSW at two venues just west and east of downtown offer an array of rising and established acts in genres under the broad Americana umbrella. Wednesday brings the long-running Guitartown/Conqueroo Kickoff to two stages at the Dogwood, 715 W. Sixth St, while Wednesday and Thursday finds the second annual Billy Reid/American Songwriter Shindig at Weather Up, 1808 E. Cesar Chavez St.

Guitartown, a North Carolina Internet discussion group, teams with publicist Cary Baker’s Conqueroo company to present acts from from late-morning to mid-evening at the Dogwood. Highlights include Dave & Phil Alvin, Los Lonely Boys, Billy Joe Shaver and James McMurtry.

Fashion designer Billy Reid and bimonthly magazine American Songwriter drew big crowds to Weather Up last year, and should do so again with a Wednesday bill that includes Hurray for the Riff Raff, Old 97’s frontman Rhett Miller and Jessica Lea Mayfield, plus a Thursday lineup with Kurt Vile, Robert Ellis, Shakey Graves and others. Admission requires an online RSVP.
