Hailing from Leeds, England, the members of lo-fi indie rock outfit Eagulls have earned themselves some positive chatter leading up to SXSW. The quintet found a spot on NPR’s "The Austin 100" playlist, a selection of must-see South By music acts, and was named one of Rolling Stone’s 25 must-see acts for the festival, which begins next week.
The debut self-titled album from Eagulls came out Tuesday, and it’s a beautifully unpolished shard of post-Joy Division turbulence. Along with the debut album from fellow U.K.-ers Cheatahs released earlier this year, "Eagulls" makes a good case for 2014 being the year of slightly hazy post-punk. Either that, or it’s actually 1990 and we should all invest in some acid-wash jeans posthaste.
Check the printed edition of Austin360 on Friday for a interview with the band, along with the rest of our SXSW preview coverage. In the meantime, watch the video for Eagulls’ song "Possessed" above. SXSW-goers can catch the band’s official showcases March 12 at 8:40 p.m. at Stubb’s, March 13 at 1 a.m. at Buffalo Billiards, and March 14 at 10:30 p.m. at Bar 96.
