As the mercury rises, the streets start to sizzle and the city settles into a slightly slower groove, we present the 360 Summer Mixtape. Each week we’ll check in with a different figure in the Austin music scene for summery song selections and pro tips on keeping it cool through the hot months ahead.

Track selector: Ian Orth

Band: Orthy

Next gig: We just wrapped up a busy year of shows by opening for Holy Ghost! at ACL Live. We’re taking the summer off to finish our debut full length, so we’ll be back in the fall.

Favorite cold drink: Keeping it sober this summer, and slightly boring, but truthfully, nothing beats an ice cold glass of water. Hydration y’all. Look young, forever.

Best way to cool off (that’s not Barton Springs): Binge watching anything with my wife Emily, and our cat, Monty Brando whilst reminiscing of when we used to be in our twenties and partied all night long.

Summer show that’s got him psyched: Last Splash Swim Club, hands down. It’s the Fun Fun Fun Fest, Transmission Events, and Learning Secrets’ collaborative pool party series happening the last Sunday of every month at W Hotel Wet Deck. Austin’s been in the need of a proper pool party series, and Last Splash Swim Club has some amazing DJ sets lined up like, Holy Ghost! June 29, Tim Sweeney & Joakim on July 27th, Poolside August 31, and some surprise guest on September 28 which I’m sure will be rad. Nepotism? Sure. Doesn’t change the fact that this is a great series!

SONGS FOR SUMMER

Bill Withers - "Lovely Night For Dancing"

- First off, you just can’t deny the power of Bill Withers. Secondly, you can’t deny that there’s something a little magical about Summer nights in Austin. Combine both, you got memories for a life time.

Jaakko Eino Kalevi - "No End"

- This song came out in 2013 on Jaakko’s ‘Dreamzone’ EP, but it still gets regular spins around my house. While the whole EP is stellar, "No End" is a standout, and perfect introduction to Jaakko’s take on modern blissed out cosmic pop music. I’m a huge sucker for any song with a low slung bass line and heavy pad synths, which No One is dripping with. He has an excellent new EP slated for release on Tim Sweeney’s Beats In Space imprint that’s going to be a big player this summer.

The House in the Woods: "Sunlight On Rusting Hulk"

- I’m a sucker for ambient music, and The House in the Woods 2013 full length ‘Bucolica’ has been a constant in my headphones and car since it’s release. The song "Sunlight On Rusting Hulk" fits the summer vibe just right, wrapping up a long day of swimming at Hamilton pool, or a weekend hanging in the Hill Country cruising home down highway 71, sun setting, bumming tomorrows Monday, but stoked that another weekend is fast approaching. Zen vibes.
