FOUR SONGS FOR SUMMER

"Rent I Pay" by Spoon - Crunchy. Loud. Hypnotic. Raw. Welcome back SPOON!! The organ hits absolutely work me into a frenzy. It’s a quick play that requires a few plays before skipping to your next jam. With Britt and the boys heading out on the road to support the new record, I think another ACL taping is in order.

"It Was Always You" by Maroon 5 - This track sounds like it belonged on The Lost Boys soundtrack. I can almost see Adam clad in a chain holster blowing a big saxophone, even though there’s no sax on the tune. When the drums kick in, it gets a little "Muse-y" but I think that makes me love it even more. This song quickly made it onto my "interstate driving playlist" as well. I imagine the kids will be dancing to this one when the remixes begin to trickle in.

"Palisades Park" by Counting Crows - One of two singles from their upcoming album, "Somewhere Under Wonderland," this is a track that makes you remember what real albums were like. Weighing in at 8:21, it’s got a room to tell it’s story dynamically moving from a smokey Jazz intro to a jangly rock harmony hook heavy chorus and back again. The last two minutes hold my favorite lyrics: "Love is like angel dust… Have you been aching to trust or just or have you been waking yourself to lust.." This one was the highlight of their ACL Live show last week. I’m ready for the full album.

"Rainy Day Woman" by Kat Edmonson - Finally! Here’s the first single from the new Kat Edmonson album, The Big Picture, out on September 30. This song’s might have the biggest, most elaborate production placed behind the young ingénue’s gorgeous and tender voice but she certainly rises to meet the challenge and then some. This is the kind of tune I could imagine opening the next James Bond 007 blockbuster. (It’s not that far fetched considering that 007’s distribution partner, Sony is Kat’s new label. Just saying!) Regardless, the song swoops and swings. I love it. And I love Kat. Here’s opening her October tour brings her back to Austin. I miss my friend.
