Investigative reporter Chris Willis and KXAN have apparently parted ways.
Why? No one’s talking.
The well-known reporter’s bio has been stripped from kxan.com, but general manager Eric Lassberg and news director Chad Cross didn’t respond to inquiries from the American-Statesman on Friday and again on Monday.
Since shifting from weekday morning anchor to chief investigative reporter two years ago, Willis has been heavily promoted by KXAN, which markets itself as the city’s "In-Depth. Investigative." station.
He’d been at KXAN since 1999.
Here’s what Lassberg had to say in November 2011, when he announced Willis’ new gig: "Chris Willis’ tenacity, skills and journalistic passion combined with 12 years of news experience in Austin at KXAN will tremendously strengthen our investigative efforts and ultimately our mission to improve the local community."
"His experiences in the field and from behind the anchor desk have allowed Chris the opportunity to develop unmatched relationships with our audience and the newsmakers of Austin," added Michael Fabac, KXAN’s news director at the time.
Fabac is now at a station in Columbus, Ohio.
Willis took the place of Nanci Wilson, who abruptly left in 2011 after two years at KXAN.
She’d previously worked at two other Austin stations: KEYE and KVUE.
