OUR TOP PICKS
Friday: Doug Sahm tribute at Hole in the Wall. Nov. 18 marks the 17-year anniversary of Sahm’s passing, but his legacy looms as large as ever in 21st-century Austin music — and beyond, with artists such as rising country star Margo Price recently acknowledging his influence. Nearly three dozen local players have signed on to take part in this celebration at one of Doug’s favorite old haunts, including Joe King Carrasco, Rick Broussard, Eve Monsees, Ben Ballinger, Hilary York, Speedy Sparks and Doug’s son Shandon Sahm. The $10 admission benefits the SIMS Foundation. 8 p.m. 2538 Guadalupe St. holeinthewallaustin.com. — P.B.
Friday-Saturday: Grouplove at Stubb’s outdoor. The Los Angeles crew born in an artist commune in Crete has a new collection of upbeat pop songs that shimmer with buoyant energy. Odds are pretty good that everyone who shows up will leave the club smiling. With Muna and Dilly Dally. $30.50-$32.50. 7 p.m. doors. 801 Red River St. stubbsaustin.com. — D.S.S.
Friday-Sunday: Punk Rock Olympics at Spider House Ballroom. Hardcore punk pioneers Total Abuse top the bill for the second annual extravaganza of eardrum splitting sounds and slapstick sportsmanship. Other bands on the bill include Pok Gai, the Bad Engrish and Maid of Ace and the semi-competitive sports include crowdsurf racing, Mad Max limbo and mosh pit musical chairs. $15 daily/$45 for 3-day pass. Kicks off at 8 p.m. nightly. 2908 Fruth St. spiderhouse.com. — D.S.S.
Saturday: Eric Johnson at the Paramount. Long considered by many to be Austin’s premier electric guitarist — even in the 1980s when he and Stevie Ray Vaughan were the city’s twin-engine burners of prog-rock and blues — Johnson has taken an intriguing turn toward acoustic guitar and piano on his new album “EJ,” due in early October. He’ll play both guitar and keyboards in this solo performance at the century-old downtown landmark. $20-$45. 8 p.m. 713 Congress Avenue. austintheatre.org. — P.B.
Saturday-Sunday: Darlingside at Cactus Cafe. An indie acoustic quartet from Boston, Darlingside performs onstage like classic bluegrass bands who gather around a single microphone, but their music isn’t really bluegrass at all. True, they do use fiddle and mandolin, but the sound comes out more along the lines of chamber-folk, which makes it fitting that they opened a tour for Austin’s Patty Griffin last year when they released their second full-length album, “Birds Say.” They’ret ouring behind a new five-song EP, “Whippoorwill,” issued last month. Frances Luke Accord opens. $15. 8:30 p.m. 2247 Guadalupe St. cactuscafe.org. — P.B.
