Will Drake play SXSW this year? ACL Fest? Tammy Perez/Austin American-Statesman

Today’s release of the lineup for the 2015 Coachella Music Festival gives us a good indication of which artists who are clearly making the festival rounds this year. This, in turn, gives us a chance to speculate about who will drop by Austin, and which fest they might play. Alabama Shakes, Ryan Adams and Steely Dan are all likely candidates for the Austin City Limits Music Festival. We already know Tame Impala is headlining Levitation (formerly Austin Psych Fest) and if AC/DC were to headline the Black stage for Fun Fun Fun Fest’s tenth anniversary…well, that would be epic.

But what about the festival at hand? The South By Southwest Music Festival runs from March 17-21 and though the fest has released close to 400 bands who will perform in 2015, notable names have been few and far between. From the Coachella lineup, new sensations like British deconstructionist R&B artist FKA Twigs, Norwegian DJ/Producer Todd Terje and Australian electro soul singer Chet Faker (who played last year) are all likely candidates. None of them have conflicting dates currently listed on their Web sites. When we talked to Run the Jewels before their Red 7 performance Killer Mike made a very genuine profession of his love for Austin so we wouldn’t be surprised to see the ballistic rap duo swing through and Jack White seems to love hitting the streets during SXSW to shake things up. On the other hand, when we talked to excellent trip hip duo Sylvan Esso last year, the band, who had a breakout year at SXSW 2014, they explicitly said they hoped to not be in town for the fest and their current tour dates conflict with a possible appearance. It seems highly likely, however, that Sylvan Esso could get high billing at either ACL or FFF Fest.

Drake is a big question mark. As far as I know, unlike other top tier hip-hop artists (Kanye, Jay-Z, Nas, etc.), Dreezy has not been to SXSW. Lil Wayne received an award on his behalf at the MTVu Woodies last year. The sensitive hustler would be a good get for the fest, but he also could emerge as a headliner for ACL in the fall.

Other artists playing Coachella I hope to see at SXSW: Azalea Banks, Caribou, Lykke Li, Jungle, Benjamin Booker.
