Michael McWillie, “Away,” monotype print, from the exhibit “Rhapsody of Beats” at Flatbed Press

Michael McWillie’s recent monotypes in this Flatbed Gallery show honor a certain joie de vivre. His whimsical compositions embrace the animal form, celebrating their elegance and gentleness.

Scottish terriers, cardinals, elephants, giraffes and zebras inhabit spaces free of danger and malice, taking the viewer to a place of innocence and wonder. Fanciful blue notes also inhabit these spaces, floating around and above the animals, becoming symbols of their carefree and exuberant temperament.
