Austin got in on the action big-time Monday night as David Letterman entered the final month of his long-running late-night show on CBS, with western swing band Asleep at the Wheel and former Austin singer Kat Edmonson performing a song just after a late-booked appearance by former Texas Longhorns golfer Jordan Spieth fresh off his Masters victory.
Asleep at the Wheel leader Ray Benson flashed the "hook ’em horns" sign, perhaps a salute to Spieth, after the band’s performance of "I Can’t Give You Anything But Love." Edmonson sang the lead vocal, as she does on the recorded version of the tune from the group’s new Bob Wills tribute album "Still the King."
Most but not all of the band’s current lineup took part. Letterman bandleader/keyboardist Paul Shaffer and bassist Will Lee joined in for the performance, meaning Wheel pianist Emily Gimble and bassist Dave Miller had to sit this one out. Here’s the video:
