Different Stages is producing an Ibsen play, “John Gabriel Borkman,” which has a strikingly relevant plot for our times. Contributed by Different Stages

Different Stages closes out the season with Henrik Ibsen’s “John Gabriel Borkman,” translated by Nicholas Wright. It’s the all-too-timely tale of a man who was once wealthy, powerful and revered but finds himself disgraced and destitute after a financial scandal and prison time. Meanwhile, his estranged wife plots for their son to restore the family’s reputation.

Their story, like almost all Ibsen tales, is a dark one laced with the Norwegian playwright’s sly humor.
