Austin institution ThunderCloud Subs is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year (multiple lifetimes in the restaurant business). As part of its big year, ThunderCloud is letting customers create special sandwiches that will serve as monthly specials.
The August special is the "Big Paul." The sandwich, which consists of ham, turkey, salami, pastrami, pepperoncinis, black olives, and three kinds of cheese, is named after the husband of ThunderCloud COO Patty Sughrue. The Big Paul costs $6.99 for a small and $8.49 for a large.
More about the Big Paul, from ThunderCloud’s site:
"Weighing in at a full pound, this sandwich was created by Rachel Young, one of our stellar store managers. For years, she made the sandwich for our chief operating officer Patty Sughrue’s husband Big Paul when he came into her store for lunch, and she eventually started selling the sub to other folks who saw it."
The Big Paul comes on the heels of the first two Customer Creations, Green Eggs and Ham (avocado, ham, and egg salad) and the Popper (Nada Chicken, cream cheese, and jalapenos). Those two Customer Creations are still available as off-menu specials.
