Texas sculptor Jesús Moroles died in a vehicle crash June 15, several news sources have reported.

Based in Rockport, Moroles, 64, was traveling north on Interstate 35 when he was involved in a crash north of Georgetown, according to the Rockport Pilot.

Moroles is best known for his large-scale granite sculptures, many of which were commissioned for corporate and private collections.

Moroles, who was born in Corpus Christi in 1950 and received a bachelor of fine arts degree from North Texas State University in 1978.

He received the Texas Medal of the Arts in 2007 and the National Medal for the Arts in 2008.
