About the band: Who needs buzz blogs when you have Spotify’s “Discover” function? That’s how I found out about the ache-hearted, lo-fi reverie of Pity Sex, and they are one of the bands I’m most excited for at SXSW 2015.[youtube ]
The four-piece has two full-length albums to their name: 2012’s “Dark World” and and 2013’s “Feast of Love,” and both loving reference the scuzzy, blown-out sound of hazy greats like Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth. Their single “Wind Up,” though, is Exhibit A that the Michigan noise kids don’t merely copycat their forebears for lazy nostalgia. There’s a pulsing pop-punk energy built in, and the economical lyricism will invoke that “waking up at noon in yesterday’s clothes in your best friend’s bedroom” feeling. It’s Hemingway for dirtbag twentysomethings in skinny jeans.
