It seemed that as soon as Austin singer-songwriter Carson McHone sang a line about overcast skies, the sun suddenly was beaming down on her. McHone and her three-piece backing band had the honor of opening Thursday’s free SXSW show at Auditorium Shores.

Crowds were light with many locals still at work, but the weather seemed to be holding out well enough to encourage larger crowds in the evening. Yesterday’s cancellation of Ray Lamontagne’s headlining slot likely will hurt turnout; the Deftones were quickly added in his place, with Thao & the Get Down Stay Down, Brian Fallon of Gaslight Anthem and Parker Millsap preceding them.

Friday’s 5 p.m. show features Coheed and Cambria, Wolfmother, Beach Slang and Tijuana Panthers. Saturday’s Latin music lineup starts at 2 p.m. and features seven acts, including local favorites Grupo Fantasma and Colombian ensemble Systema Solar.

Admission to the shows is free with a SXSW guest pass, available at guestpass.sxsw.com. At the gate on Friday afternoon, SXSW staffers were also handing out the passes to anbody who needed one.
