After a major Austin appearance Dec. 30 opening for Willie Nelson at ACL Live, rising country star Sturgill Simpson will return on April 2 to play the outdoor stage at Stubb’s.
Simpson’s 2014 album “Metamodern Sounds in Country Music” has been a major breakthrough for the Kentucky native, who received best album, best songwriter and best male vocalist honors in the Nashville Scene’s Country Music Critic’s Poll released today.
“Metamodern Sounds” is an unusual record, blending elements of classic country, psychedelic rock and other genres. It placed No. 6 on the Village Voice’s 2014 Pazz & Jop poll, which covers all genres, and is nominated for Best Americana Album at next month’s Grammy Awards. Simpson announced on his Facebook page that he’s signed a deal with Atlantic Records.
Tickets to the Stubb’s show, which also includes a DJ set by Nashville’s Electric Western, run $20-$23 (or $120 VIP) at the venue’s website.
