Over the weekend, Mellowfest an epic two day local music binge went down at Empire. Organizers’ decision to make single day tickets available for Friday, but not Saturday, was not a good call and the event was under attended on Saturday. But it provided an excellent opportunity to catch a broad range of Austin’s incredible local bands.
Across the board I was impressed with the level of talent and commitment from all the artists. Standouts included explosive funk ensemble Mama K and the Shades, the sweeping indie pop of Migrant Kids and the driving rock of A. Sinclair. Other highlights were rapper Queen Deelah’s final solo set before she goes on maternity leave and Phranchyze offering a master class on crowd control during his high energy set.
Here are a few sights and scenes from the event.
Man, been watching @Phranchyze do the damn thing for over a decade. He's grown into a killer performer. pic.twitter.com/ss5FH7jyte
