Milt Kobayashi, “Monique,” oil on canvas. Gallery Shoal Creek

In his moody urban interiors and portraits, New York-based painter Milt Kobayashi distills the essence of an intimate moment or a late-night scene. A third-generation Japanese-American, Kobayashi achieves his style by blending the elements of oriental line, pattern and composition with a refreshing spontaneity.

Each of the expressive narratives in his artistic works flow and ebb with a rhythmic cadence of color and brevity of brushstrokes.
