Reports surfaced Wednesday that Texas Music Office director Casey Monahan will not be retained by Governor-elect Greg Abbott when Abbott takes office later this month.

When contacted, Monahan referred all questions to Abbott’s office. As of early Wednesday afternoon, representatives for Abbott had not responded to phone and email inquiries.

South by Southwest managing director Roland Swenson sent the following statement to the American-Statesman early Wednesday afternoon:

“This is a serious blow for Texas music. Casey has helped countless Texas musicians and music companies from around the world to bring business to Texas. He’s helped SXSW navigate the waters of Texas state government for decades.”

Monahan was hired as director in 1990 when the Texas Music Office was created under Gov. Bill Clements. According to its website, the TMO “is a state-funded business promotion office and information clearinghouse for the Texas music industry.”
