Danny Schmidt, “Owls.” Schmidt’s last three records, counting last year’s duo release “For Keeps” with his wife Carrie Elkin, have been on renowned folk label Red House, but he’s self-releasing this impressive collection of finely detailed and carefully crafted songs. Schmidt sticks mostly to traditional acoustic arrangements, centering on guitars with graceful accents of piano and occasionally pedal steel (from Texas legend Lloyd Maines), plus harmony vocals from Elkin on many songs. The more electric “Wings of No Restraint” provides a sonic and lyrical catharsis of sorts at the album’s end. Playing June 21 at Strange Brew. Here’s a short promo-video preview of the record:

Texas Horns, “Blues Gotta Holda Me” (VizzTone). It’s a blazing brass party with Mark “Kaz” Kazanoff, John Mills and Adalberto Gomez on this 13-song set. Marcia Ball, W.C. Clark and Nick Connolly guest on vocals for a cut each, and guitarists Johnny Nicholas and Anson Funderburgh and Derek O’Brien also get moments to shine. But the spotlight rightly shines on the trio of horn players, especially on instrumentals such as Kazanoff’s “Rippin’ and Trippin’” and the Curtis Mayfield classic “People Get Ready.” Here’s the title track:
