With Valentine’s Day approaching, we asked a handful of Austin couples who play music together to share a few thoughts on how love and music intertwine in their relationships. We’ll post their responses here on Austin Music Source each day this week, and feature them in the Sunday print edition of the American-Statesman on Valentine’s Day.Monday: Carley & Jonny WolfTuesday: Christine Albert & Chris GageWednesday: Chaka Mpeanaji & Qi Dada Ras
LAUREN & ERIC LARSEN
Lauren and Eric play together in the indie rock band Ume.
How they met:
Lauren: I met Eric when I was a 15-year-old guitarist playing in a noisy punk band at a skatepark in Baytown. He came up to talk to me while I was moping on the vert ramp after our show. He was the first guy to ever ask for my number, and we’ve been together ever since.
Their special song(s):
We danced to “Emotion in Motion” by Ric Ocasek at our wedding, but “Dirty Boots” by Sonic Youth will always remind me of when we were teenagers in love.
“Dream date” or ideal romantic night:
With a new baby, a dream date right now would be anything that involves a hot tub and sleeping through the night.
A Valentine’s Day or anniversary spent on the road together or apart:
Lauren: We always try to get a date night while on tour. One of the most special was a Valentine’s (and my birthday) meal at Au Pied de Cochon in Montreal. We’ve never eaten so much.
Plans for this Valentine’s Day:
The plan so far is to sneak into our favorite secret heated pool and then grab sushi with our 9-month-old in tow.
Lost and found:
One of our first concerts together was the Descendents. I remember us holding hands in the front row, but when the first song kicked in, a mosh pit exploded and we were separated — until the moshing brought us back together in the back of the club.
