Leaving Austin will be hard, but this is one opportunity Adam Winkler says he just couldn’t pass up.

Winkler, KEYE’s weekend sports anchor for the past six years, is heading for Norfolk, Va., where he’ll be sports director at CBS affiliate WTKR.

His final day at KEYE is July 10, and he starts at WTKR on July 14.

“I’ve made a career out of finding the right words to tell a story or describe an outcome, but it’s nearly impossible for me to properly convey what these six years in Austin and at KEYE have done for me,” Winkler said. “Working at KEYE, alongside two of the best teammates I’ve ever had in executive producer Anthony Geronimo and sports director Bob Ballou, has allowed me to evolve as a journalist and a storyteller.

“But Austin’s influence on me and my life wasn’t merely professional. I met my soon-to-be wife here (playing dodgeball!), and while we’ll miss much about Central Texas, we are thrilled to start our new life together on the East Coast.”

At WTKR, Winkler will help build a sports department that is being relaunched.

“Here in Austin, I’m not just a weekend anchor in one of the best cities and sports markets in the country,” he said. “At KEYE, our management has given us the creative freedom to truly cover local sports in the fashion we feel is best and most valuable to our viewers. It’s a great gig, and not one I’d give up easily. To put it simply: I wasn’t just going to leave.

“During my 12 years in local news, I’ve been fortunate to work with – and for – some of the most creative and influential people in this business. That experience prepared me to be a sports director, and that’s a role I was actively, albeit selectively, pursuing. This position in Virginia is not just a chance to advance my career and run a department located in a sports-hungry (and gorgeous!) part of the country. At WTKR, I’ll be in the unique situation of helping rebuild the station’s sports brand, as we’re bringing back sports after a multi-year hiatus. It’s a remarkable opportunity and one about which we could not be more excited.”
