One of the year’s best food events has released its roster of talent. Each year the Austin Food and Wine Alliance gathers a couple dozen chefs to cook meat over an open fire. The event, fittingly, is called Live Fire!
It takes place at the Salt Lick BBQ Pecan Grove Pavilion on April 7 and will feature a lineup that includes culinary stars Aaron Franklin (2015 James Beard Award winner for Best Chef Southwest), Rene Ortiz and Laura Sawicki (James Beard Best New Restaurant nominee Launderette) and Dallas chef John Tesar of the excellent steakhouse Knife. New names includes Kevin Fink of Emmer & Rye, Miguel Vidal at Valentina’s Tex-Mex BBQ, Jason Stude of Boiler Nine and chef Evan LeRoy of Freedmen’s. Sweets will come from Becky Masson of Fluff Bake Bar in Houston and Katherine Clapner of Dude Sweet Chocolate in Dallas.
Tickets cost $85, with proceeds benefiting the Alliance’s grant program, which, since 2012, has distributed more than $100,000 in grants to chefs, farmers, artisan producers, and nonprofits by funding projects focused on culinary innovation. The AFWA is also the non-profit partner of the Austin Food and Wine Festival, which takes place April 22-24.
Of course, there will be plenty of wine, beer and spirits, as well. Related note: Shuttles from downtown will be available for an additional $20. For tickets and more information, visit AustinFoodWineAlliance.org.
