OUT THIS WEEK

Charlie Mars, "The Money" (Rockingham/Thirty Tigers). Though Mars lives in Oxford, Mississippi, the band for his last couple albums has included several Austin musicians, and that’s true again on "The Money," which was recorded in the West Texas town of Tornillo with a crew including bassist George Reiff and drummer J.J. Johnson plus former Austinite Billy Harvey on guitar. Mars talked this summer about wanting to pare things down to a fairly raw form — "not putting anything in the recordings that didn’t belong there" — and that basically holds true on "The Money," which feels uncluttered though not spare. Folk-rock songs with easygoing rhythms ride sweet grooves that fit Mars’ casual and comfortable vocal style well, with John Ginty’s keyboard and B3 organ flourishes often providing rich melodic accents. Release shows Oct. 17-18 at Threadgill’s South, in-store Oct. 19 at Waterloo Records.

Balmorhea, "Heir" (Western Vinyl, 7-inch), plus deluxe reissue of 2007 self-titled debut album. One of Austin’s most intriguing and accomplished instrumental acts releases two impressive new tracks (simply titled "Heir I" and "Heir II") on vinyl, along with a remastered version of the first collaboration between core members Michael Muller and Rob Lowe. Release show Oct. 24 at Central Presbyterian Church.

Pompeii, "Loom" (Red Eye Transit). The first record in six years from this sonically ambitious indie act. Release show Oct. 17 at Holy Mountain. Check out the album’s title track:
