When the U.S. Grand Prix speeds into the Circuit of the Americas at the end of the month, racing fans and ordinary Austinites will be treated to Formula One Fan Fest, a series of free concerts headlined by 2015 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominee Joan Jett, golden era hip-hop heroes, De La Soul and the Tejano fusion pioneers, the Texas Tornados. Booked through a collaboration between COTA, Transmission Events and ACL Live, Fan Fest will present three days of music on four stages in a ten-block area downtown that includes a section of the Warehouse District and Republic Square Park.

The entertainment kicks off Friday, Oct. 31 at noon with a set from DJ Protege and caps off that night with a 10:45 p.m. main stage event featuring De La Soul that runs til midnight. Local musical hooligans, The Minor Mishap Marching Band, open for De La Soul and Denver gypsy punk outfit Devotchka plays a set on the same stage at 8:45 p.m. Capturing the spirit of Halloween, one of the side stages will present a collection of Austin’s best cover bands headlined by Selena tribute act Bidi Bidi Banda at 10:45 p.m.with bands paying homage to David Bowie, Tom Petty and the Smiths earlier in the night. Another stage features local music from Whisky Shivers (9 p.m.) and honky tonker Jesse Dayton performing as his psychobilly alter ego Captain Clegg and the Night Creatures (7:30 p.m.).

On Saturday, the main event is Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. The rock ‘n’ roll queen kicks off an hour and a half long set on the big stage at 10:15 p.m. Local rocker Black Joe Lewis opens for Jett and Nashville alt-country act Those Darlins start the program on that stage at 4 p.m. Other Saturday highlights include a high-powered trio of acts, thrash-funk originators Fishbone (6:30 p.m.), multi-cultural NYC outfit Red Baraat (8:30 p.m.) and Austin’s own cumbia funk powerhouse Grupo Fantasma (10:30 p.m.) on one of the side stages. Local folk pop duo Dawn & Hawkes have a 9 p.m. set and Dallas soul lifer Bobby Patterson also plays at 6:45 p.m. For families out and about, the entertainment starts early with a DJ set at noon and the first live act, Claire Reilly-Roe, at 1 p.m.

Sunday has a matinee program headlined on the big stage by the Texas Tornadoes at 3:30 p.m. The music starts at 11 a.m. and includes sets by Dirty Heads (3:35 p.m.), Hurray for the Riff Raff (2 p.m.) and the Heartless Bastards (4 p.m.).

In addition to music, Fan Fest will feature a variety of family-friendly activities including racing games and displays. Austin Ghost Tours will host a spooky fortune teller and on Sunday morning there will be Yoga in the Park.

Fan Fest is free, although VIP packages are available for $199/3-day, $99 Fri. and Sat. and $69 Sun. More information.
