In a sound-bleed sandwich between the alien chill vibes of Alt-J and a heavy metal assault from Judas Priest, rapper 2 Chainz coolly paced the Blue Stage, effortlessly eliciting hands above heads and booties to shake. While other performers may nearly kill themselves to fire up an audience, 2 Chainz barely broke a sweat, calmly commanding the crowd behind a pair of shades and (obviously) two gold chains.
From the very front row to behind the soundboard, the crowd for 2 Chainz was in constant motion and seemed unfazed by the not-so distant distractions on each side. The rowdy, ready-to-party bunch exploded with energy with minimal priming from the Georgia rapper. Be it "Spend It" and "Birthday Song" or "I’m Different" and a quick run at his verse from a remix of "Turn Down For What," whatever the Southern hip-hop heavyweight threw at the crowd resulted in a frenzied response.
Despite his calm, cooler-than-thou demeanor on stage (the set marked the first time I’ve ever seen a performer have/let/ask a female fan in the front row to tie his shoe), the long-haired MC couldn’t help but crack a grin at the warm reception, especially when a zealous fan crowd-surfed her way to the stage for a third time in his short set. "Y’all going to have to put a chain on [her]."
