Joan Parks, 85, Kyle Witt, 55, Amber Witt, 21

My mother, Joan Parks, has been an athlete as long as I can remember. A former swim instructor and high school cross country coach, she has also run numerous 5 and 10K road races, bicycled 700 miles across Australia and logged countless winter weekends skiing on the New York slopes. She got serious about tennis more than 40 years ago, and is still on the courts at age 85. I followed her lead and even met my future husband through our high school tennis team! Our daughter Amber Witt tried every sport she could think of while growing up, but her biggest commitments were to taekwondo and dance. During her college years, she picked up a tennis racquet again. Here in Austin, we three generations enjoy playing together at the South Austin Tennis Center and at the new University of Texas Tennis Center in Steiner Ranch. Our family is proof that tennis truly is a lifetime sport!

We’re looking for Central Texans who keep fit with interesting activities. Tell us — in 100 words or fewer — about yours. If you have a photograph, include that as well. Send your name, age and contact information to Pam LeBlanc, Austin American-Statesman, 305 S. Congress Ave., Austin TX 78704 or e-mail it to pleblanc@statesman.com.
