Justin Sherburn’s "Man with a Movie Camera." Composer and keyboardist with the indie rock band Okkervil River, Justin Sherburn leads an ensemble of five musicians in a score he’s written for the groundbreaking experimental 1929 silent film "Man With a Movie Camera."

A masterpiece of early Russian avant-garde cinema "Man With A Movie Camera" is a virtually plotless film that traces the burgeoning mechinized urban life in the Ukranian cities of Odessa, Kharkiv and Kiev in 1920s Soviet Union. Directed by Dziga Vertov, the film employed then-new cinematic techniques such as split screens, freeze-frames and backward projections, and a modernist, abstract self-reflexive approach to the art of moviemaking.

Sherburn’s score features a string trio, analog synthesizers and a rock rhythm section.

Doors open at 7 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m. North Door, 502 Brushy St. $15. www.ndvenue.com
