One of the longest-running and best-known shops on South Congress Avenue is gearing up to leave the prime shopping strip.
Uncommon Objects, 1512 S. Congress Ave., will relocate next month due to rising rents, leaving behind the building that’s been its home since 1991, manager Van Harrison said Monday.
The new location is at 1602 Fortview Road in South Austin – a spot Harrison points out is still a part of the vaunted 78704 ZIP code. A grand opening is set for Oct. 27.
The shop’s last day on South Congress Avenue will be Oct. 17.
Uncommon Objects recently started sharing the news with customers, many of whom have seen a number of other well-known businesses leave the area in recent months.
“They’re devastated,” Harrison said. “We’re the heartbeat of ‘Keep Austin Weird.’ We’ve been such an anchor for South Congress.”
The new location does have its benefits, though, Harrison said. It has free on-site parking, for instance, and the store will have more space for merchandise.
“The new space is great,” he said. “A lot of local businesses are moving into that area. It’s an up-and-coming shopping district.”
Other locally owned businesses that have relocated from South Congress Avenue and South First Street to the Fortview area include End of an Ear, Hill Country Weavers and Vulcan Video.
“It’s a natural evolution of the neighborhood,” Harrison said. “These things happen.”
