In a couple of months’ time, we’ll all be lamenting Texas’ lack of a true autumn — no leaves changing colors, no drop in temperature below 80-degrees — but one local cidery has found a way to make it seem like fall will have arrived anyway.

Austin Eastciders’ newest canned offering, Spiced Cider, launches this week, and people throughout the cidery’s wide distribution footprint will be able to find it more easily after Labor Day, a time when we start craving fall flavors. 

Oh, boy, does the Spiced Cider recreate those quintessential flavors. For a moment after sipping it recently, I could picture autumn leaves and leather boots, the mixture of spices intermingled with Eastciders’ apple cider base transporting my senses back to a trip I took last November to West Virginia to visit relatives. (That’s a place, unlike Texas, where all four seasons are clearly in evidence when they’re supposed to be.)

The Spiced Cider, according to Eastciders, is crafted with a mixture of seven sweet and zesty spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, cloves and ginger. These are blended with the base cider by first being turned into a tea, with the goal that the cider can be enjoyed during just about any time of year.

"We aimed to create a cider that is refreshing enough for those hot Texas days, yet warm and complex for when the seasons start to change," Eastciders’ R&D manager, Brittany Perlo, said in a news release.

The East Austin cidery has been busy of late expanding its canned offerings beyond its ubiquitous six main flavors. In July, it released the first cider in its experimental Maker’s Stash series, a lemon ginger combo that had verve and a lively effervescence. The Spiced Cider is similarly only out on store shelves for a limited time, and it’s being tagged as Eastciders’ "inaugural limited-release cider in a can."
