Ready to take a vacation without ever leaving the city? You’re in luck: Last Straw, a cocktail bar that has pegged itself as the place to go when you want to forget the outside world, will open this week in the former Chicon space on East Sixth Street.
And it really looks like a tropical paradise.
Awash in colors — dusky orange, cerulean blue and sunshine yellow, to name a few — that suggest you’ve wandered into a hideaway rum bar on some Caribbean island, Last Straw will provide Austin with some much-needed tropical vibes starting Aug. 15 (perhaps not coincidentally, the day before National Rum Day). It’ll be open evenings only for now, according to Eater Austin.
Behind Last Straw’s quirky vacation vibes is the bar’s managing partner JR Mocanu, who previously worked as the bar manager of neighborhood bar Nickel City and the shuttered South Lamar restaurant Vox Table. He has teamed up with Will Bryant and Cody Haltom, who are artists and designers, to bring the brightly colored space to life.
There is arguably only one dedicated tiki bar in town — Pool Burger — and it doubles as a burger stand. Though Last Straw isn’t exactly pulling out tiki glassware for each of its drinks, it’s certainly going heavy on the rum and will help to fill a niche in Austin left abandoned by now-shuttered tiki-esque concepts like Isla. Expect cocktails like the Last of Us, a blend of overproof rums, lime, passion fruit, pineapple, cinnamon, falernum and tiki bitters — a potent mix with a two-drink limit.
