Bikes, Fireworks and Warren Hood at the ABGB
12 to 8 p.m. July 4. Free. 1305 Oltorf St. theabgb.com.
What could be better than spending your holiday afternoon drinking beer and eating pizza? The ABGB is offering those and more for Independence Day festivities, which will also include games of cornhole, a watermelon-eating contest and the South Austin brewpub’s regular Wednesday residency, Hood, who will start performing at 5 p.m. Around 7:30 p.m., the ABGB will also host a big group bike ride to Lady Bird Lake so participants can all watch the Austin Symphony fireworks together.
4th of July Corn Dog Eating Contest at Black Sheep Lodge
1 to 4 p.m. July 4. Free to watch; $20 to participate. 2108 S. Lamar Blvd. facebook.com/events/173596513478183/.
Stuff your face with an all-American food item this Independence Day. This South Austin bar is hosting its eighth annual corn dog-eating competition — whoever eats the most corn dogs in eight minutes wins. All $20 entry fees will go toward Austin Pets Alive, and each contestant will take home a free commemorative T-shirt. Of course, there can only be one winner. Whoever shovels in the most corn dogs will earn a $250 cash prize. There will also be $2 hot dogs and drink specials all day.
"Jaws" Movie Party
2:45, 6 and 9:40 p.m. July 4. $12. Alamo Ritz, 320 E. Sixth St. drafthouse.com.
Too terrified to watch an elusive giant shark terrorize islanders while you’re marooned in Lake Travis on inner tubes, as part of the Alamo Drafthouse’s "Jaws" on the Water event this summer? The Alamo is offering a less scary alternative where you can feel safe in the theater seats. But it’s still going to be fun. This interactive movie party with props lets you live the shark-hunting adventure along with Brody, Hooper and Quint — minus the salty sea air and actual mortal peril, of course.
Fourth of July Beach Bash at NLand Surf Park
12 to 4 p.m. July 4. Free-$60. 4836 E. Hwy. 71. eventbrite.com/e/fourth-of-july-beach-bash-tickets-47124257924.
There’s no better way to stay cool on a hot day than by splashing about in the water. The recently reopened surf park in Del Valle is offering families (with kids 8 and up) more than just waves to surf — NLand will have $5 tubing sessions from noon to 4 p.m. during a Fourth of July Beach Bash. Plus, as part of the festivities, enjoy all-ages crafts and other activities at NLand’s Overlook and beers at the on-site brewery, and sand toys for little ones will be available on the beach.
