KVUE, Austin’s top-rated TV station, has a new owner.

Gannett Co. said Monday that it has finalized its $2.2 billion purchase of Dallas-based Belo Corp., which owns 20 TV stations nationwide, including KVUE and three other stations across Texas: WFAA in Dallas, KHOU in Houston and KENS in San Antonio.

Before acquiring Belo, Gannett already owned or operated 23 TV stations nationwide. The company hadn’t had a presence in Texas since 1999, when it sold KVUE to Belo.

The deal, first announced in July, received federal approval late last week after Gannett said it would sell KMOV, the Belo-owned CBS affiliate in St. Louis. Gannett already owned St. Louis NBC affiliate KSDK.

KMOV, along with two other former Belo stations in Phoenix, KASW and KTVK, were sold to Meredith Corp. for $407 million in a deal announced early Monday.

In addition to its TV holdings, Gannett also owns USA Today, as well as a number of other daily newspapers in cities across the United States.
