Want to run the marathon to help homeless dogs? To prevent drowning? To feed hungry people? Or to raise money for medical research?

The philanthropy program of the Austin Marathon and Half Marathon Presented By Freescale (whoa, that’s a mouthful!) lets runners do just that.

Learn more about the program at a mixer from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7 at Rattle Inn, 610 Nueces Street. Representatives from Austin Gives Miles, which replaces the 26 Charities for 26 Miles program, will be on hand to explain how the program works and connect runners with a cause.

The first 50 attendees will get a free drink ticket.

The Austin Gives Miles program works to provide central Texas non-profits with public exposure and a fund-raising opportunity. Volunteers from the non-profits, in turn, pitch in to stuff packets, man water stops and help out at the finish line chute.

"We want to provide our runners with the platform to not only reach individual goals, but the capacity to also empower the Austin community," said John Conley, race director. "By signing up to raise money for one of these organizations that has a direct impact in our city, participants are doing both at the same time."

The race’s philanthropy program has raised more than $1.8 million for Austin-area non-profit organizations in the past seven years.
