I’ve dropped by Ballet Austin’s Butler Community School for classes in hula and hiphop over the years, and know that you can work up as much of a sweat dancing as you can biking or running.
The school will host International Dance Day from 1-5 p.m. May 4 to celebrate all things dance. Classes will be offered in a range of styles, including Bollywood, salsa, Afro-Brazilian, Latin Freestyle, Indian tribal and West African.
Cost is $8 per class or $20 for an unlimited pass for the afternoon. Dancers of all skill levels are invited.
Butler Community School, 501 West Third Street, offers classes seven days a week. For more information, go to www.balletaustin.org/internationaldanceday.
The Dance Committee of the International Theater Institute founded International Dance Day in 1982. It is celebrated on April 29, the birthdate of Jean-Georges Noverre, the creator of modern ballet.
