I was delighted to get a text late last night asking if I might be free on Tuesday.

No, not a request for a date night — darn! — but it was Hannah Casparian, the baker behind Hannah Bakery, asking if I could take her place at a food debate happening Tuesday at the Townsend because of a scheduling conflict.

I hadn’t yet heard about Hot Takes, a new debate comedy show that started last fall. This will be Hot Takes’ third event pairing experts who know about a subject and comedians who don’t to host a debate on said subject. (The first two were on design and smart cities.)

Food technology and food systems are the subject of Tuesday’s debate at the Townsend, 718 Congress Ave. The first of three rounds starts at 7:30 p.m., and the event is open and free to the public.

I get to be on a team with blogger Emily Teachout and chef Jorge Hernandez, and we’ll be debating against Baby Greens founder Sharon Mays, Contigo/Chicon chef Andrew Wiseheart and Mother Jones food writer Tom Philpott. We’ll have comedians Rhett Jefferson and Roy Lazarus, who often perform at the New Movement Theater, to keep us laughing.

Hot Takes founder Julie Yost says they plan to have debates every six weeks, and you can stay tuned for the next one by checking out the Facebook page.
