Brandon Scawthorn is getting ready to make his Food Network debut.

The 10-year-old Kyle native, who has been in the kitchen with his mom, Yelena, since he was 3 years old, is competing on "Rachael vs. Guy: Kids Cook-Off," a four-part miniseries that premieres at 7 p.m. Sunday.

His dad, Kevin, says that when he started just as a kitchen helper, stirring the pot for his mom and adding ingredients. "Then he started memorizing how to make things" and it took off from there, Scawthorn says.

Brandon, who also races bandolero cars with his dad, is the youngest of eight kids who are competing for their own FoodNetwork.com web series.

Yelena traveled with Brandon to Los Angeles for the two-week shoot. "(Cooking) has always been a mother-son thing. That’s always been their time together," Scawthorn says.

But when Kevin Scawthorn fires up the grill, he often steps aside and lets Brandon do the cooking.

"He can cook a steak better than Truluck’s," he says.
