Childish Gambino, the angsty rap side project of actor and comedian Donald Glover, best known for his role in the popular NBC TV show "Community" will headline the night portion of the free Butler Park showcase on Saturday, March 15. The afternoon portion of the showcase will feature a tribute to the legends of Memphis music and includes a Snoop Dogg performance.

While there is an element of humor in Glover’s rap work, much of Childish Gambino’s material is quite dark. It’s clear that Glover, who left "Community" this season, uses the project to work out his personal issues. He alarmed fans last fall with a series of highly introspective and troubled notes posted to his Instagram account. Nonetheless, the 2013 Childish Gambino release "because the internet" is by far his strongest musical work to date, a multi-dimensional album that explores a wide array of aural textures from lushly melodic and hooky to highly experimental and dischordant.

The Auditorium Shores SXSW shows, perennial faves of locals, have been relocated to Butler Park this year due to renovations at the lakeside park. In the past these shows have been open access. This year, concert-goers will have to pick up a free guest pass wristband for entry. SXSW staffer Chris Patin said they won’t limit the number of wristbands given out, but entry will be subject to park capacity. Although wristbands will be available at the Butler Park shows, SXSW is recommending that fans pick the wristbands up early to expedite entry. The wristbands are already available at most Austin Specs, Game Over Videogames, Whole Foods and Oat Willie’s locations as well as at Waterloo Records. (See guestpass.sxsw.com for more details.)

The wristbands also will provide access to other free SXSW events, including the Flatstock Poster show, the Music Gear Expo and the Renegade Craft Fair. No registration is required to pick up a guest pass wristband, but users are encouraged to "activate" wristbands online to be entered in giveaways and to receive messages about other free SXSW events.
