Austin indie-rock band Spoon is kicking off its first tour of headlining dates in two years by playing a surprise free show tonight at Hotel Vegas, the group confirmed this afternoon on its Twitter page.
Rumors had been circulating beforehand, fueled by a post on local band Sweet Spirit’s Facebook page that stated Sweet Spirit would be playing "with a band that is also a utensil." Sweet Spirit’s post listed a 10 p.m. start time for Spoon’s set, with Sweet Spirit following at 11 p.m. The Hotel Vegas website lists a 9 p.m. doors time for a show featuring Sweet Spirit "with very special super secret guest TBA soon."
Spoon’s weeklong Southeast tour formally begins Wednesday in Memphis, followed by dates in Nashville, Atlanta and New Orleans. Festival dates take up much of the band’s summer itinerary, with a special non-festival Los Angeles show Aug. 8 on the Fairbanks Lawn of the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
Spoon also is booked for both weekends of the Austin City Limits Music Festival in October.
