That Takes the Cake, one of the largest cake and sugar arts shows in the country, will return for the 11th year later this month at a new venue.

The event will take place Feb. 21 and 22 at the new Round Rock Sports Center, 2400 Chisolm Trail Road, and the theme is Once Upon a Cake, according to longtime show director Jennifer Bartos, owner of Make It Sweet in North Austin.

Every year, the competition, hosted by the local Capital Confectioners club, draws some of the most serious cake decorators in the world, who make spectacular sculptures and creations that many of us have seen only on television.

Children younger than 12 can enter a cake for free and win a participation medal, Bartos says, but they have to be registered ahead of time. Advance tickets cost $10 a day or $17 for the weekend ($12 and $20 at the door). (No charge for children younger than 17.)

The deadline to register for the competition and classes and pre-purchase tickets is Monday, and you can find out more and sign up at A portion of the proceeds is used to pay for scholarships for local culinary students.
