South by Southwest Film Festival not quite your speed?

Sunday’s films are less extreme, and more focused on culture and landscape. Photo courtesy Banff Mountain Film Festival

Fear not. The backpack-and-hiking boots crowd gets its own version of movie theater nirvana April 18-19, when the Banff Mountain Film Festival returns to the Paramount Theater, 713 Congress Avenue.

The festival takes place over two nights. Saturday’s Radical Reels lineup features adrenalin-packed films about everything from downhill mountain biking and ice climbing to kayaking and other extreme sports. Sunday’s World Tour show (my favorite) focuses more on culture and landscape. This year’s lineup includes films about an 88-year-old skier and a stand-up paddle boarder investigating how we use and abuse water.

All the films originally screened as part of the 2014 Banff Mountain Film Festival in Canada. All the films are set in or somehow related to the mountains.

Tickets are available online or at Whole Earth Provision Co. Photo courtesy Banff Mountain Film Festival

This year marks the 10th year that Whole Earth Provision Company has brought the event to Austin. Proceeds benefit Texas State Parks.

Doors open at 5:30 and the show begins at 7 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday doors open at 4:30 and the show starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are $23 in stores or online. For more information and a list of films and previews, go here. http://www.wholeearthprovision.com/banff/
