The past few months there’s been no escaping Spanish Gold on Austin radio. A slew of singles have made the rounds over the ATX airwaves.

The semi-local supergroup — guitarist Adrian Quesada (formerly of Grupo Fantasma) and bassist Gerald Branch have Austin roots — opened up the big stage at the back of the park with their Black Keys-esque guitars and vintage hooks. Their modern Southern-fried rock sound drew the first sizable crowd of the day I saw at Zilker.

The band acknowledged radio’s role in their local popularity. "Radio is still alive," said frontman Dante Scwebel.

Introducing the song "Day Drinkin’," which might as well be the unofficial anthem of fests everywhere, Scwebel said. "This song is about day drinking, but mix in water. It’s a long weekend."
