For many years, my sole exercise was road cycling. That’s great for cardio, but I wasn’t building strength, especially in my upper body. I’d ride about nine months out of the year and go into winter hibernation mode. A couple years ago, I got bored with just cycling and decided to mix in running, doing the occasional 5K race. I also started lifting weights and doing yoga to build strength. Then I watched my teenage son do his first triathlon and figured I might be able to do one for the bucket list. At the ripe age of 54, I "tri-ed" my first triathlon, the Rookie Triathlon. Since then I’ve done five sprint triathlons, a duathlon and am looking forward to three or four more this year. I love the mix of year-round training. My overall shape and condition is better than it was in my 20s and 30s.
