I am a psychologist and knew better. Sitting is deadly. But I did mostly that until a friend challenged me to run - well, walk and pant while she ran. It worked, and I eventually moved faster. Later, with the middle-aged advantage of less competition in my age group, I won a few medals. Fast forward more, and I won my age group in a push-up contest last year. Who says there are no advantages to getting older! Now I’m hooked on hiking, water aerobics, and strength training with a trainer I count on to be a drill sergeant if needed. Recently four of us "seniors" did a Grand Canyon rim-to-rim hike, the hardest and most glorious physical challenge for me so far. To get ready, we added (with loaded backpacks) stair climbing and hills. We’re now planning our next adventure and not slacking off in our workouts.
