With all the holiday distractions, it's easy to forget the original context of Christmas, which is why the First Baptist Church of Austin stages its annual "Angels Over Austin" live nativity scene tour.
During the sixth-annual walking tour, which re-creates scenes attendant with the birth of Jesus Christ, guests are guided by angels and encounter the Three Wise Men (and Women), a talking star, the innkeepers, stable hands and Mary and Joseph.
"There will even be camels," said Denise Hammett, chair of the steering committee that organized the event. "The tour takes visitors through the manger scene and into the chapel, where they will be greeted by Mary, Joseph and the Christ child."
Following in the footsteps of the biblical story that the tour depicts, Mary and Joseph arrive in Bethlehem only to discover that there is no room at the inn.
Each tour, which lasts about 20 minutes, ends with a performance (on Sunday only) by the church's Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra and will include selections from composer George Frideric Handel's "Messiah."
In addition, there will be refreshments, a petting zoo, crafts for children and an art exhibit featuring egg tempera paintings by local artist John P. Cobb, who is known for his pieces depicting biblical scenes.
"Angels Over Austin" tours take place every 15 minutes from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 to 11 a.m. Sunday. The First Baptist Church of Austin is at Ninth and Trinity streets. Admission is free. For more information, call 476-2625 or visit www.angelsoveraustin.com.
