Inside Music
Sept. 22, 2005 Just when you thought Austin music's history couldn't get hipper, Hole In the Wall booker and budding Bob Dylan fanatic Paul Minor recently came across this obscure tidbit: the first live performance of Bob Dylan with the Band (Levon Helm, Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson were called Levon and the Hawks at the time) was Sept. 24, 1965, in Austin. Crank up "The Basement Tapes" this Saturday to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the concert at the Municipal Auditorium (later Palmer Auditorium). To find out more details about the half-acoustic/half-electric show, plus the band's wild night at the old Villa Capri, read an account in Sunday's Life & Arts section. By the way, tickets to the show, Dylan's Texas debut, were $3. -- Michael Corcoran

Participating acts include Asleep at the Wheel, Jerry Jeff Walker, Jimmy LaFave, Reckless Kelly, Bruce Robison and Ruthie Foster. Ticket prices range from $20 to $100 for 'Relief Tickets.' Rick Broussard, Kevin Brown, Jesse Dayton, Elizabeth McQueen, Kacy Crowley and many more will play a benefit for hurricane victims Oct. 1 at the Hole In the Wall. The all-acoustic show will be an all-day affair, starting at 2 p.m. All proceeds for this show will be donated to the American Red Cross. -- M.C.
Here's a benefit unrelated to Katrina: Sunday, Oct. 9, Emo's hosts a benefit for Randy 'Biscuit' Turner's mother, Nellie Mae Turner, to offset expenses linked to Biscuit's passing. Headlining will be legendary Austin punk rockers the Dicks, joined by X singer Exene Cervenka along with Punkaroos, Pong, Pocket Fishrmen, Sexy Finger Champs, Areola 51, the Delinquents, the Slurpees and more. There will be a silent auction and tons of 'Biscuit-o-bilia' available. The show starts at 3 p.m. -- J.G.
The South Lamar Alamo Drafthouse will be screening the documentary 'Rock School' on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. Paul Green, the subject of the film, will be in attendance, and the school's national All-Stars will perform before the film each night. On Oct. 1, Green and the All-Stars will appear from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Austin branch of the Paul Green School of Rock Music, 13803 Dragline Drive. -- J.G.
