Recommended Music: Greg Klyma, The Gossip and more
Thursday, September 21, 2006FRIDAY
Greg Klyma. This once itinerant folkie settled in Austin back in December 2004, quickly scoring the sorts of gigs one might expect from a once-itinerant folkie. But his third album, 'Driver,' is a full-band effort, expanding his palette to include the roots rock of this days in upstate New York. 'R 'n' R,' the first song on 'Driver,' augments his acoustic guitar stabs with atmospheric percussion, bluesy electric guitar solos, and melody-expanding electric piano. Now and then he sounds a little cranky about kids today: "I never did get the whole techno thing/what does it mean if it ain't got that swing?/Emo's dark and metal's fast/it might work for some but I think I'll pass." But so are a lot of Austinites. Waterloo Ice House. 600 N. Lamar Blvd. 472-5400. — Joe Gross
FRIDAY
The Gossip, Mika Miko, Swan Island. Possibly this week's most exciting show, this bill brings together the next generation of gal punk. Swan Island's proggy punk weaves together dissonant guitar flickers, building on Sleater-Kinney's new wavey strum the way S-K built on Bikini Kill's feminist punk. Mika Miko is shambolic amateurism at its most engaging and headliners the Gossip (who go on at 11 p.m.) plays some of the most soulful dance-punk around. A killer lineup at at Emo's. 603 Red River St. 477-EMOS. — J.G.
SATURDAY
Octagon. Given that Dan the Automator isn't supplying the beats or samples, you could complain that this isn't Dr. Octagon at all — just another one of Kool Keith's ever-proliferating hip-hop alter egos. What you'd be overlooking, though, is that, if the new 'The Return of Dr. Octagon' is any indication, this is one of Keith's better alter egos, with music every bit as charged up as his lecherous raps. Emo's. 603 Red River St. 477-EMOS. — Jeff Salamon
SUNDAY
Rockin' For Rights. The Texas Civil Rights Project, the famous civil rights nonprofit, hosts a night of Texas blues, rock and blues-rock featuring Jimmy LaFave, Troy Campbell and Seth Walker. LaFave's killer voice and bluesy riffs, Campbell's soulful songwriting and Walker's licks are all in the service of an important cause. Tickets are $25. Jovita's. 1619 S. First St. 447-7825. — J.G.
